My seventh grade math teacher ratted me out when she told my Dad I needed glasses. Well now, 100% of the time I wear contacts. I don't like looking through glasses. Everyone says you get used to it, but I get annoyed by them. I stepped on my last pair, so decided to opt for the nerdy ones, but these are my favorite style ever. I like laying in bed reading a book with glasses. Anyone totally inspired by Ms. Pandora like I am? She has the ombre style hair, the adorable glasses and she's even a little bit cross-eyed like I am (well it appears so anyway!) You can really only tell on me when I'm tired. One of my eyes gets "sleepy" looking. Brett always picks on me. Well anyway, let's just say I'll wear these once or twice because of her!

(blazer and vest - thrifted | boots - target
tights, shirt and skirt - forever 21 | belt - urban outfitters)

I need to lint roller this blazer. I did literally nothing today. Brett woke me up to waffles (he's been a little too good this weekend.. I wonder if he has something up his sleeve!) and then we went to his parent's to do our truckload of laundry. I took a nap, we got pizzas at K2, came home to watch Desperate Housewives and saw it wasn't on, so I decided to post these. I always hate when I'm not sure if I should post something. I'm working on Q&A posts too! They take a lot of time!

Back to the too-long, too-much week tomorrow. Oh! By the way, Brett and I have been talking about Michigan lately and we always wonder what people really think or associate Michigan with. What do you associate Michigan with? Or what do you think about when you think of Michigan? We always worry people just think of Detroit when they think of Michigan, but really there's so much more than that! But anyway, we were just curious!

i love the nerdy outfit to go with the nerdy glasses!!! you're so cute tieka<3
your tights and skirt are more the adorable. I love you in glasses too, you should wear them more! They make you look even prettier!

i think of...lakes. pretty lakes. love the glasses on you!
I too wear my contacts 100% of the time. I never wear my glasses (even though they cost me a bunch of money). I think it is because my head is small and I feel like they stick out so much on the sides. Maybe I will think about posting myself wearing them. I am so blind with out glasses or contacts. haha
You look absolutely adorable, as always! Your pictures are always so crisp and beautiful, mine need some serious improvement.
Michigan... hmm, honestly nothing comes to mind. But I didn't grow up in the US, so I don't know much about a lot of places.

oh wow! ... your '7th grade glasses story' is the exact opposite of mine. i always wanted glasses in middle school. i hoped and prayed (and may have fudged an optometrist appointment..haha!) until i got them. i don't wear them anymore, but have a really nice faux tortoise-shell pair like yours from urban outfitters that i rock anytime i want a splash of cute nerdiness.
all in all, those tights are to die for - very sweet sunday outfit.
xo.

I totally love glasses on everybody! I don't know why. It just completes the look, I think.
Still loving those tights too!

very cute! When I think of Michigan, well, sad to say I think of snow... and factories... and pretty forest and countryside? But I'm a California girl who hasn't been East of Texas ;]
you look so darn adorable!!!! and you know what? i also did nothing today and was contemplating on whether i should blog today or not! hahahaha :D
totally love your look here! i mean, there's nothing that isn't great about it. but your tights are so rad!
Oh my gosh I LOVE those glasses! You really make me wish I needed to wear them... so cute! And yes, Pandora is totally awesome. I really love this "nerdy" glasses trend, it's just so cute!
I associate Michigan with my APGov. teacher because he taught at the University of Michigan.
Cute outfit, you look identical to the girl in the link you posted! (In a good way!)
I think of Grand Rapids and Calvin College, because I had some friends that went there, so we did a roadtrip there for spring break last year! I loved it!
I love the tights, there is something about them that just brings the whole outfit together!
I hate wearing glasses too, partially because mine are too big on my head so they fall off even if I tilt my head the slightest bit.
www.sonyasark.blogspot.com
loooove the tights + glasses + the blazer with a skirt!
I love these glasses on you! So funny you posted this because I just told Mel a very similar story last week--my teacher (5th grade) ratted me out too, and after one year of glasses I was DONE! CONTACTS WERE A MUST! So with my entrance into 6th grade, the glasses were tossed aside and no one's ever seen me in glasses since (except the boyfriend and certain family members.)
Anyway, you look darling, and you should wear those glasses more than once or twice.
just discovered your blog! loove your style and your hair color.
xoxox.
I love this outfit, especially those tights!
Gorgeous braid and you should rock those glasses more often!
xx
What I think of when I think of Michigan:
-Amazing food! Other than my family, I miss the small restaurants I used to frequent the most. I can't find their equivalent anywhere else. It's been years since I've had good Chinese or Mexican or Pizza. Maybe that's why MI is one of the fattest states in the country?
-The fact I can point to the spot underneath my thumb and say, "I live here."
-The fact that only people from Michigan understand that.
-And, I miss forests and trees and how beautiful it gets in spring/summer.
I'm really looking forward to your Q&A post. =]
I think of my best friend from high school, Kristi, when I think of Michigan. She lives in Ypsilanti.
I have a pair of glasses too, though I really don't need them whatsoever. I hate them though, I'd never wear them. I lost them for like three years and just found them three weeks ago, haha!
i have never ever been to michigan.. so mainly what comes to mind is sufjan stevens' "greeting's from michigan" and lake michigan....which makes me think of chicago. ha. what are your favorite parts of michigan? (: have a good week!
anna
i love those glasses on you tiek! so cute. michigan makes me think of home and you! oh how i miss you!
This is one of my favorite outfits of yours. This look is super cute on you, especially those glasses! I really love the blouse + blazer + vest combo.
I totally have the same cross eye/sleepy thing going on! And I feel the same way about glasses. I actually have a lazy eye, but you can't really notice unless I'm super sleep-deprived.
Loving those glasses! Sometimes I actually wish I need glasses so I could wear geeky ones like that :)
tieka! i got so excited when i saw this. we have the same glasses. they look so good on you! :)
love the tights, and i have the exact same glasses! :)
your glasses are so cute! i am the same way - i am contacts for the most part, but occasionally, you have to give your eyes a break!
to answer your question: i always associate michigan with the city of flint because i had an old boss who was from flint! she was pretty awesome.
Yeah, all I think about is Detroit and car manufacturers. Sorry. But I'm from Jersey, so I get a lot of hate my way and try not to judge other states on stereotypes. I'm sensitive like that.
i really don't know much about michigan...i watched roger & me when i was in high school...and i know it's surrounded by the great lakes. but i suppose i should know more about it now that i live in the midwest. i wouldn't mind visiting michigan and expanding my horizons while i'm here. any recommendations?
If you were to ask people not from Michigan who have talked to us, I'm pretty sure the whole "using your hand as a map" thing probably pops into their heads.. I love pointing to my palm and telling people "THAT's where I'm from" :)
I love your glasses. I have needed vision correction since second grade ad I rarely wear glasses anymore since I prefer my contacts. But, I do think glasses are pretty cute.
When I think of Michigan I think of trees. Lots of trees and water. And 8 Mile, but that's only because I had to watch it in a class last quarter.
I like those tights.
When I think Michigan, I can really only think of Lake Michigan. I've been there many times, camped out 50 feet from the water (it's so amazing to see a sunrise over Lake Michigan!)
Love this outfit!!
Your blog is wonderful, adding you to my blogroll :))
-Shoeless Simone
i adore this outfit of yours! you definitely remind me of ms. pandora, especially in that gorgeous close-up shot of you. you know how to work those glasses :) loving the paperbag waist on that skirt by the way. it's great with your belt.
i associate michigan with my birth, i was born in east lansing but i only lived there for about 3-4 years. i remember tons of snow though and loving it :)
This is a new look for you! It looks great! Way to flex that fashion muscle!
your frames are really hot actually.. i need a new pair i'm on the hunt!
yay i cant wait for the NY party either!!
Even though I'm from Canada, I associate quite a few things with Michigan
- Lakes
- Sufjan
- My mom lived in Grand Rapids with a friend for a year when she was 19
- My friends call me Michigan sometimes - my name is Michelle
:)
You look gorgeous! I love the glasses. I have some too but don't wear them often.
I'm loving your pink blouse underneath with the blue skirt and your tights! Can't get over them.
clothedmuch.blogspot.com
i think you look adorable with glasses! and the paperbag bottoms are cute too.
i associate michigan with the university actually, as that is the only thing i know.
gorgeous pics hun...love love your tights!!!! you look so cute in your glasses too!!!
Michigan will always have a place in my heart! I was born in Chicago but moved to NY when I was 5. Most of my family still lives in Illinois but my grandparents have a cabin on Fire Lake (Upper Peninsula) and we used to go every couple of summers. I haven't been there in years but we might get to go this summer. It's my favorite favorite place in the world!! Just reading your blog makes Michigan look pretty cool too :)
btw. I love the outfit, as always!
aw i love the glasses....and i can definitely see how you have been inspired by pandora.
i really enjoy the rest of the outfit also, especially the layering and the contrast of the almost denim looking skirt with the floral tights followed by the slouchy boots....perfect
i have the same thing when it comes to glasses! and when i think of michigan...well, that was home, where i grew up, i think of the lakes, the space, the people i could go on and on!!
First off, lovely blog! I Love these photographs! Your clothes, taste and the way you just "mix n' match" is amazing and inspiring!
xx

haha your right we do have the same glasses! You look darling in yours! My teacher in 6th grade told on my too, I was so mad at her. I tend to break my glasses all the time! I'm getting lasik on Wednesday and I'll be free of them forever!
i totally love your look here! haha, love those glasses and that look so much that i totally wish i had glasses and went to get my eyes tested in the hope that i would have a legitimate pair to get some... i totally don't need them though! haha. such much for that idea.
you look gorgeous by the way. love the photos. xx
Please put in your Q&A your makeup or skin care routine. Your skin looks lovely!
this outfit is wonderful! and I love love love those glasses!
You look so adorable with your glasses! I love the shirt peeking through the vest & blazer, too... Oh, and I never really associated Michigan with anything but the Great Lakes before, now I associate it with my dear friend Tieka from Selective Potential and her adorable hubby!
perfect looks!! as usual,,you always look pretty :)
and the tights is adorable!! I really love it..matched it with boots is perfect!!
Love,
SWEET ESCAPE
i get that weird, sleepy, cross-eyed thing too...
when i think of michigan, i think of lakes and cold. but, you are certainly opening my mind to new possibilities for michigan!

Those tights are awesome. I'm from the UK and wish I could get Forever 21 items here :( Love the boots too - the outfit really shouldn't work but soooo does. Your personality really shines through. I have just started my own blog - inspired by girls like you. Please check it out...

Those glasses are so cute! I'm the same way about mine though, and I always wear my contacts.
I have family in Michigan and my dad grew up in Niles, so Michigan makes me think of my dad's family. I also associate it with the Great Lakes and the Wolverines and the Big House (I'm a big college football fan). I haven't been to Michigan in about 2 years, and even then I just went to Niles so I was barely over the border. It's just so cold there!
I love reading your blog beacuse you are from MI as well as me. It gets so sad around here sometimes (I work in Detroit, live in RO) and I love reading your blog and all the cute pictures you take!

Oh the glasses look is so adorable! I'm back on a glasses shopping spree, again (after a failed attempts last summer) hopefully I can find a pair I like and can joined on glasses post too ;)
Michigan remind me of Sufjan Stevens too... yep mostly because I dont really know anything else about it either.
-Coco from Our Paper Moon
This look is so goofy, I love it.
When I think of Michigan, all I really think of is Great Lakes. I don't really hear about it a lot...so not much comes to mind. But I guess that's better than me assuming you ride a horse to school and live on a farm, like a lot of people do about Texas. :P
I just got my first pair of glasses in 17 years the other week. I've been wearing contacts ever since my parents finally gave in (junior high) and got rid of the glasses even before then. But my eyedoctor told me my eyes were getting too tired from the strain (I work behind a computer 8h a day) and now I'm wearing glasses at home in the evenings to let my eyes 'breathe' or whatever.
Being European Michigan doesn't say that much to me, I think of 'lake michigan' and indeed 'detroit' (which my friends who visited say is great) and cars. And the virgin suicides, wasn't that located around there?
When i think of michigan I think of Dutch people. I go to a very dutch school (I myself am not dutch) and a lot of them have roots in michigan. That's what i think of.
shauna-thoughts.blogspot.com
cute cute everything! I've always wanted glasses, in elementary school I lied during the school test so I could get them, but the eye doctor foiled my plan :)
Being from ontario and only 3 hours away from detroit, i always picture downtown detroit when i think of michigan.
but i will tell you that you have changed my opinion and i really want to explore it!

When I think of Michigan I think of the show Freaks and Geeks, the book Middlesex, Detroit and all my good friends from Denver who were originally from Michigan. A lot of Michiganians (Michigonians?) seemed to move to Denver! I honestly didn't know that places like Grand Haven existed! It sounds so lovely. I live in Portland, Ore. and absolutely love it to bits, but meet few people that love their hometown as much as people from Portland do! Nice to see that you love Michigan so much!
PS: LOVE your tights!
love it! great tights
Technically I've only been to Michigan via the airport in Detroit. But I've always wanted to visit! Mainly the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. as we call it in Wisconsin. I always thought Michigan to be a beautiful place to visit and hope to some day!
awesome!
because of your blog i think of lakes, well dressed people, and that one show called 8 simple rules. hahah.
i. heart. those. glasses.
Hmm. I have two conflicting views of Michigan. Having lived on the border near Toledo for four years, mostly when I think of Michigan I think of the dry, barren stretch up I-75 to Detroit or over to Ann Arbor (the landscapes are pretty much the same). And the creepy "DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS" signs along the way near the prison, hahaha. I also listened to the NPR station out of Ann Arbor when I lived there, so I heard a lot about Michigan's economic problems, and we had a big influx of people coming into Ohio for jobs.
But on the other hand, I love how bright and vibrant and artsy Ann Arbor is, and I made a lot of weekend trips up there. Michigan and Ann Arbor are kind of different places in my mind. I thought Ann Arbor was really the only good thing about Michigan until my parents took a trip up to the UP and I saw pictures. I'd like to explore more of Michigan after seeing those.
Ooh I love the glasses. I too wear contacts almost 100% of the time, except recently I've been really into wearing my glasses when I lounge around. I can't wear them when I drive because they have such thick sidebars. I want to get big nerdy ones like yours when I'm due for new glasses this summer!
I saw this amazing outfit on lookbook !!
You look stunning ! love this combination !
xxx
Hello from the Windy City! You are so inspiring! I love every single outfit in every picture. I love fashion, and I, too, am trying to be a bit more risky/creative with my clothing. I love getting tips from fashion blogs like yours. I'm new to all of this but it's so inspiring that I might even want to try it out myself some time. :)
I wanted to ask you, what does your blog name mean or what made you came up with it?
Thanks!
~Melissa
I think of Detroit and the Great Lakes.
Very cute! I used to only wear contacts...then I left college..and the longer I've been in the working world- the longer contacts are just for fun stuff and long drives (I hate no peripheral vision!!).
As for Michigan - I think of Kobo arena and the great Harding Hit (i.e. Nancy Kerrigan getting clubbed...I was a figure skater and was there...what a nightmare - my last trip to Michigan other than flying through Detroit).
Well, I have one set of cousins in Lansing, and another set in the Detroit area, so I always think of them when I think of Michigan. Other than that, I probably think of Lake Michigan. One time when I was visiting Lansing, I went on a day trip with my dad, uncle, and cousins to go kayaking on Lake Michigan. It was wonderful, probably my best Michigan memory.
Also, love the glasses. BD
seriously. your cuteness is killing me. you should wear those glasses more often. misssss youu!
I love the glasses! I have a couple pairs but sdaly they're fake, I wish not. Forever21 is so great, I love all your items from there and your belt is cute.
you always have the best outfits =)
i love your glasses! they're so nerdy-chic and cute.
I don't know why it took me this long to find your blog! It's amazing. I'm totally inspired by your outfit... finally I can put a vest that has been sitting, ignored, in my dresser to good use!
I absolutely adore this look... and your a cutie with those glasses on :)
Love & Aloha,
S

your glasses are fabulous! i have worn contacts since i was 16 because i hate the way that glasses feel - but a few weeks ago i tried on a pair pretty identical to the ones you're wearing...and i thought they were pretty comfortable. they look good on you!!
michigan always makes me think of a friend of mine who grew up there. he has the coolest style EVER. it's impeccable. and he has the best taste in music. period. so basically whenever i think of michigan i think of good things. :)
i'm a new reader... your blog is darling, i love it. <3
I had to get glasses when I was about 9. I'm now blind as a bat, but wear contacts 90% of the time. I have had a major hankering for fun nerd glasses though, and just haven't spent the time or money to get another pair. Anyway, yours are darling, and I simply adore this outfit. The tights are so perfect, too!
O0h I love your blog! Following as of now :o)

When I think of Michigan I think of my all time favorite movie "True Romance" have you seen it? its the ultimate love story!
You look super cute in your glasses. I just started loosing my sight ( i sound so old), it sucks, I still forget to wear my glasses and then when I am driving, trying to read signs I remember, oh , yeah, I'm supposed to be wearing my glasses!
oh MY gosh! This is my favorite outfit of yours ever! I totally thought of pandora before I read the text of your post! Are those your real glasses? I looked for prescription glasses like this everywhere, and could not find them anywhere! I settled for a cat eye, but now I am wishing that I hadn't!
Lovely glasses and stunning tights !
When I think of Michigan, all I can think about is lakes and water. And cold. You are such inspiration in the cold months. Thanks so much!
Claire
such a unique outfit! i love it & looove your boots x
your braid is so cute & i adore the tights, you have a really cool and unique sense of style!
xoxo

totally cute look! glasses look ran on you. lazy eyes are so funny and unique!
I think of skiing when I think of Michigan, because that is what I did the only time I went there... I'm from Minnesota and I worry people forget we exist at all (or that we are basically Canada!)
u are great with glasses! xx cat
CiTiEs of B
oh my goodness! i love this so much tieka! i adore you guys! did you know ray is a drummer too? we met when we were in a band together. kind of a similar story..kind of..haha. we should totes double date when you guys come to chicago! : )
I love your tights sweety!!!
i associate Michigan with my grandparents - they live in Sterling Heights where my mom and I lived (with them) when i was 5-8. This may seem strange but also - I'm a fairly new reader (love your blog!) and as soon as I saw your photo I thought "she looks just like my best friend while I lived in Michigan!" and then it turns out you live in Michigan. Funny coincidences.
love the glasses, btw!
i love love you style Tieka! Your one of my inspirations models, you'r hair looks beautiful and the tights and skirt are awesome. Definetly gonna prob it soon!! Check mine blog please i'll feel really grateful!! God bless you and Brett ;)
My sixth grade reading teacher ratted me out to my mom about needing glasses! I've been wearing contacts regularly since the age of 13 (a year and a half after initially getting glasses).
This is such an adorable outfit. I love the glasses and the vest and the tights.
I always associate Michigan with freezing cold weather and the upper peninsula. And Ann Arbor (my first visit to Michigan to visit friends in college). I'd love to have a lake house in Michigan (I live in Chicago). So much better and fresher than Wisconsin or Indiana, yet still close enough for a weekend getaway.
Oh my gosh, I am in love with this outfit!! Those tights are so fantastic, I can't even begin.
I found your blog about a month ago and have followed you ever since. You have amazing style and you are such an inspiration :)
i go to OSU so.... michigan is not my favorite state, to put it politely :P that's really the only view i actually have of it. i've never been there, but i always assumed it was a lot like ohio.
Gorgeous!!!
love your blog and your outfits! I'm from Chicago, but I've got some family up in Saugatuk and I've also gone to South Haven several times. When I think of Michigan I think of how much I love the beaches there, and I also think of blueberry picking and peach picking because that's what I do when I go to Michigan :)
I love your glasses! They look great on you. I wish a could pull off a big nerdy pair like those!
I just found your blog and I love it! You do a great job with it! I'm a michigan girl too, now living in Chicago, but when I think about Michigan I think of the wonderful summers, and I think of home! I love it there!
