Butterflies are blooming

Today, Brett and I drove out to Grand Rapids to Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park for their Butterflies are Blooming exhibit! I haven't been since I was a kid and Brett has never been, so we figured it was the perfect time. The exhibit is amazing. There are butterflies flying everywhere.. hundreds of them! You walk this little tour through a super warm jungle and cross over through nets (so the butterflies don't hitchhike out of there!) and are bombarded with the most colorful, amazing butterflies ever. Our son, Dill, would have been so proud. He left the nest last September.

The butterflies come from tropical regions of South America, Asia and Africa and are right at home here! The butterflies arrive as chrysalises, the moths as cocoons, and both are put into the butterfly bungalow. Within days, they emerge and when they are ready to fly, often within an hour, the staff releases them on plants to allow them to adjust to their new home. It's amazing to see butterflies flying, soaring and hovering freely, then congregating along streambeds, and drinking nectar from flowering plants and feeding stations!

These kinds of things are the things that Brett and I have done since we first met - and will always continue to do and love. The things that your parents dragged you to when you were little? You can bet Brett and I will love it. We've been to every museum, every exhibit, every dumb little tourist attraction in west Michigan and make it a habit to continue to take adventures and trips all the time. It was our goal to take a once-a-month day or weekend trip, but since this semester has been so busy for the both of us - we haven't gotten much of a chance, but we have amazing trips planned every month for the rest of the year. This blog was originally just to document my life until it took a fashion turn (so glad it did!) but I still want to document these types of things.. so I hope I don't bore all of you to death!

I couldn't show any pictures of my outfit today because I had to take photos for a planned post next week! You'll see what I'm talking about soon! I'm really excited to announce a few things this week and next! April looks like it's going to be an amazing month. Plus, the weather forecast for this upcoming week looks amazing! In the range of 57 to 67 degrees! You can bet I'll be bringing out more of those spring clothes!

Aww, I love this. I think it's sweet you and Brett do these kinds of things together -- I wish we had a butterfly garden near us. I remember keeping a caterpillar as a pet for a second grade project and it was so awesome to see them fly away on "graduation" day. :)

document away girl! Brett & Tieka posts are some of my favs! The butterfly gardens look incredible!! Robin and I were married at a conservatory similar sounding to the place you two went, but we had our reception in a tent outside in the park, so no butterflies for us. :( Ok...that didn't make much sense. The place we were married has an area where you can walk through and the butterflies will fly all round you! haha!

They all look so beautiful! We have a similar place here at the museum. You go in and its a three story high room filled with butterflies.

I love taking wee trips like this, my boyf and I try to do them often too. Even if its just an afternoon picnic of four wheel driving and exploring.

Ooh, pretty! I went to a butterfly garden once when I was a kid and LOVED it. They're just so beautiful. I wish the insect section at my zoo had more of them.

Yippee! I go to Fredrick Meijer Gardens every year for that! I'm so glad they are there :)

The Christmas tree exhibit is also amazing, if you've never been.

I always pass that billboard on my way downtown! I hope to make it there sometime. Where I used to live in Canada, they had a butterfly exhibit every year and I loved it. You and Brett seem like such a fun couple.

67? Try 77! WOOD TV informs me that it really is going to get up that high...can't wait!

There was a butterfly jungle at one of the museums in London last summer and I so desperately wanted to go but nobody would venture in with me because there were so many children around. Seeings these pics definitely makes me wish I had just taken a trip inside by myself! :)

oh i love this. me and my boyfriend went to the butterfly rainforest museum in Gainesville last May and it was so much fun! We weren't lucky enough to have any land on us though. I think you had to be really still and I failed at that.

But you already know all of this :).

Thank you from the bottom of my heart-chictopia, blogging, and you have seriously given me the confidence I need to be myself.

Love always,

That looks like such a fun and beautiful place to go, you're so lucky that it's close to you! This makes me think of a time my mom went to a butterfly garden - they told her to wear bright colors to attract the butterflys, so she wore this OBNOXIOUS orange and yellow outfit. Unfortunetly she didn't attract ANY butterflies, and instead just looked crazy aha

Looks like fun! K and I also love to do things like that. You'd think it was Christmas or something from how excited we get about free museum day! By the way, I have a feeling you guys might like Biltmore Estate in NC if you haven't been-- though I know it's a bit of a trek for you. Also, if you go near the Ohio border, the Toledo art museum is free and it's huge with lots of special exhibits. K and I used to spend Saturdays there :)
