An old fashioned carnival

It's like a magnetic attraction. Put a dorky carnival or some touristy event near our town and you can guarantee Brett and I will be paying it a visit. Well, today, it was the Fruitport Old Fashioned Days. It's actually.. a pretty redneck carnival with a dirty petting zoo and a few rides and carnival vendors oogling my goodies. But, of course, we go. And, of course, I end up wearing my "carnival outfit"! Brett begged me to change of course, but being the daring fashionista I am, here I am. And after many stares and oogles, trust me, I was ready to scoot after we grabbed some shots!

I knew we had a carnival coming up and I wasn't sure what to wear to this extravagant event! At first, I spotted this darling carnival confetti dress at Modcloth, that sold out. So, then I went on the hunt for another fun dress and spotted this ZZ dress! And I purchased the very last one. I saw it said "one left" and after my purchase saw it go to "Oh no, we're sold out!" Yessss.. I win! But Modcloth has this wonderful feature where you can have them alert you when it's back in stock. Nifty, huh?

(zz dress - modcloth | bangles - empress jade vintage | peep toe wedges - moda via dsw)

These darling bangles will be hosted as a giveaway soon - so keep your eyes peeled! I was really excited when I got them in the mail to host as a giveaway and saw that they matched today's outfit perfectly. I have some really exciting news for you guys too. Wait.. you think I'm going to tell you now? No way. Of course, as always, I have a wonderful obsession of wanting to debut everything in a "cute way" on the blog, so you'll just have to wait and see! Just let me say, it's one of the most exciting collaborations for Selective Potential yet!

So after we snapped these photos, we took a ride around the lake (a typical sunset ritual in our town, it seems, to "cruise" the strip) Well anywho, Brett and I were blasting our Hall & Oates radio station and I was clicking through the camera unsure if I liked these photos or not, thinking maybe I went overboard with the riskyness in this outfit. And I turn to Brett and go, "Let's head down to the beach so you can snap more pictures" and a song on the radio's lyrics go, "I can't go for that (no can do)" and I start dying laughing. So of course, Brett starts singing this to me and I'm just cracking up. I updated my music player. It's just one of those perfectly timed out moments.. hahaha, so funny. These lyrics are just made for our guy's behind the camera: Easy, ready, willing, overtime. Where does it stop, where do you dare me to draw the line. You've got the body, now you want my soul. Don't even think about it, say no go. I'll do anything that you want me to. I'll do almost anything you want me to do. But I can't go for that, no. No can do. Bahahaha!

Oh my gosh I love this! I've been obsessed with red lately (not very summery I know) so this dress with that red lip melts my heart.
You look stunning as always! That is why you got oogled!

I think you look fantastic---the red lip is perfect! It's a look I'm always nervous to try out; am not much of a lipstick wearer in general, but it looks so great on others that I really should give it a shot.

The dress is just adorable (and a bit edgy, too!).

you look beyond adorable in this red carnival look. it's no wonder you stood out in a crowd! everyone just secretly wishes they had the guts to wear that outfit. :) the back detailing and cut is my favorite part.

Yup, I'm pretty sure Kev's going to be singing this next time I say, "can we just pull over on the side of the road up there and take more pictures, puhhlease?"

The DSW shoes! are you glad you went with the red? they're really cute, and look you had the perfect outfit for them!
Most exciting collaboration yet!?! What is this?

Oh geeze! Brett and Zach will get along great!! Zach is taking his Hall and Oates tour tshirt with him on a trip! It's the coolest thing ever!! No joke for 50cents at the thriftstore. It's from 1985 too, so it's as old as we are...hehehe...

I used to joke him everytime he wore that thing out...to the movies, to the mall, to my church...pretty much everywhere.

Oh my word, are you KIDDING me? I love these pictures. This is truly my favorite style: a little bit fifties, very colorful, carnival background. Everything about this is perfection. The beach is nice for muted toned outfits, but for red and white? NOTHING beats the carnival.

Chaucee said...

Aw well it looks like you had a ton of fun! It's been a couple year since I've been to a carnival.

You look so damn cute! Yes, it is risky for kinda-crappy little Fruitport (home to my grandparents), but I think it was worth it! I actually think you would stick out there in anything more than a Nascar Tee! Yikes!

I dare say you rock red lips better than Gwen Stefani! Lovely!

I LOVE this dress... i have been waiting for it to come back in forever! But I've been afraid its going to be super short on me, because all the reviews seem to say it is. It doesn't look too short on you, though.

And I adore those wedges! So pretty!

Me and the hunny love carnivals too! But man, you were probably the hottest person there, because that dress is divine! I love the color palette you chose-with the red shoes and red lips. You look great with red lips!

natalie said...

Isn't fashion so strange? I don't think the back of this dress is risque' on it's own, especially since it clearly gets cut off at the waist instead of sloping down to your lower back (and I guess a back just doesn't seem that scandalous to me!) But pair it with an above-the-knee skirt and matching heels, and suddenly it's enough to make the wearer self-conscious! It doesn't make any sense. You could wear shorts of the same length and flats and feel totally comfortable, but somehow high heels and a skirt are pushing the boundaries.

I always wish I had more courage to wear more matching outfits like this one, where it's not just a dress and some shoes and accessories that go well together, but it's all totally coordinated. It seems like this is out of fashion, or unusual these days somehow. We should start a revolution where we can wear outfits like this and feel proud! It seems like in a lot of older, generation-specific, girls are excited and almost expected to wear very obviously constructed fashion ensembles. I wonder if this was a true reflection of the times, or just romanticizing things.

When I studied abroad in Tokyo for a semester, I once wore a red and white striped tank top, short jean shorts, matching red pinup high heels, white earrings, and a red chunky bead necklace. I felt like it was such a fun outfit, but because I had made such an effort to match, and I was wearing heels, and the heels+shorts made my already long legs look hussy-long, I felt totally awkward the whole day. We need a fashion confidence revolution!

I absolutely <3 carnivals! I love the funhouse backdrop :) It's funny you mention about dressing for an occasion and receiving too much attention for how you're dressed. As much as I love fashion, sometimes I get self conscious about being a little too fashion forward especially if I know I'm going somewhere like, say, a carnival where I know people are going to be dressed a certain way. Kudos to you for looking amazing and dressing how you feel <3
