Haunted tower

I wish I had all the facts and the backstory to this creepy old house, but I've got nothing. All the locals know is that this house was built with no records and no family history. It is abandoned - nobody has lived in it for years. If you peek in through the windows, you see the furniture untouched, cobwebs covering everything and old melted down candlesticks with burnt tips. As you walk up the stairs and peek inside, this eerieness overcomes you and most people get so nervous that they can't even approach the house.

There is an old legend that an old woman once lived here and her family disappeared one night. It was almost like they vanished into thin air. So she dragged her old rocking chair up the multiple flights of stairs into her tower. She would sit there.. night after night after night watching the streets for her family to come back home. They never came home. She died in her rocking chair, frozen, her eyes wide open with fear.

Hehe! Alright, alright. If you can't tell already, I totally made that story up. I love you guys too much to lie. Muaaha! I took a creative writing class in college - I had to put my skills to good use! Right? Plus, I had you all so scared, right?! The truth is.. I don't know a single thing about this house except that it looks creepy.. and nobody lives here, but it's not for sale, so it's kind of abandoned. I love it though. It's such an amazing old historic home! Hehe, I'm still giggling over here at my story!

I love my namesake dress from ModCloth! When they wrote up the description about it last May, they said it would look great paired with a bomber jacket and lace-up boots. At the time, it was a bit warm to try that look.. but now that it's cooler, I wanted to give it a go! We've had insane winds these past couple of days! I absolutely love it - except for now our trees are so bare!

Stairway to Hell

This past weekend, I took a trip to explore our local cemetery. There is an old urban legend of the Stairway to Hell. It is in Lake Forest Cemetary, near the Civil War burial section. The legend goes that when a person is buried in that cemetary (and there are over 22,000 graves currently), the soul of that person goes to the bottom of the stairway. The "person" then walks up the stairway.

As they approach the top, if they are meant to go to heaven, a beautiful white light will appear: the "doorway" to heaven. If the soul gets to the top and a white light never appears, they are doomed to turn around and walk back down, knowing that hell is waiting for them at the bottom. The stairway itself is paranormally active. Unexplained geomagnetic disturbances and temperature drops have been recorded on it. - Nicole Bray via Weird Michigan

Ooooh, so scary, right? Haha! I love scary ghost stories! It's especially funny that I rode my scooter here to this spot.. so I parked my mint-green cute little scooter at the bottom of this creepy staircase. Hehe. I have visited this spot often - it's so interesting! If you climb the staircase, at the top, there are the oldest gravestones! I'm not sure why it's creepier when a gravestone is tilted sideways either!

Anyone have plans for Halloween yet or know what they are dressing up as? I have no idea! I'm not sure what is happening next weekend.. and I haven't planned costumes or anything yet. I absolutely love Halloween though. Passing out candy to trick or treater's as they run through the leaves in the front yard, watching scary movies, stuffing my face with chocolate bars, dressing up in costumes. It's all just so much fun!

The Guy Behind the Camera: 10th Edition!

Welcome to the 10th edition of the "Guy behind the Camera" series! For new readers, I started this feature to showcase some great guys that are behind the cameras of some amazing style blogs. I really grew to appreciate Brett for all of his time spent taking my photos and I figured a lot of girls out there feel the same, so this is a great place to showcase their talent and our appreciation for them! First, we have Toni from Fashion Butter. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Toni in Chicago and in New York! Hearing about her and Alec's story is like.. a movie or a fairy tale, seriously. When she first wanted to take outfit photos, he was hesitant but now that he gets to play photographer, he gets so into it! He makes funny faces, tells her when her eyes are closed, tells her how to turn her body. Sometimes he even comes home and tells her that he found a cool place for them to shoot next time. She's originally from Chicago and he's from Canada.. and now they live in Greece together. She went to Greece on a vacation, met him and they have been inseparable ever since. He's her best friend in the whole world. Ah, love this!

Next, we have Sybil from Animated Confessions! They have been together for 3 years and even though they jumped into a long distance relationship, he never fails to make her feel good about herself. They've always been suckers for celebrating monthsaries and they always like to try something new every month. It's quite a challenge now that they are apart, but it's pretty exciting now to think of ways to celebrate! They love trying new foods and always have the cutest little adventures on her blog!

Third up, we have Kristina from Pretty Shiny Sparkly. She wanted to submit her wonderful boyfriend, Houston, for the series for many reasons. When it comes to putting up with her outfit photos, he's so incredibly patient, restricts eye-rolling to a minimum, and for a guy with little to no photography experience, once he wraps his hands around the camera, he is paparazzi all the way. She couldn't ask for a better or more understanding photographer! So sweet!

Next, we have Sweet from Confessions of a Drama Queen. Sweet says that her and King are two different people who fell in love. King loves rock bands while she prefers mellow r&b and love songs. She loves fashion and likes to dress up while he settles for the simplest outfit ever. Sometimes people wonder how compatible can they be? But ever since she started her blog, he has been her official photographer and never lets her down. He says bluntly if she looks funny in a photo and tells her what he thinks is the best pose! She loves him for being patient and for being in charge of holding the camera all the time. She loves him not only for taking her photos, but for helping promote her blog. She adores him for being so supportive! He even decided to move to Bangkok to be with her!

And last we have Veronika from Tick Tock Vintage. Her husband has been taking her photos for over 2 years now! He's such a good sport about it! He even trekks out in the rain to snap pictures for her even when he is running late for work! She wanted him to be featured for once, instead of her. She tells him he should join Chictopia all the time - she thinks his style is so amazing and he's actually an amazing thrifter! They are such a great-looking couple!

Well, that's it for my October feature of "Guy Behind the Camera"! If you would like to submit you and your guy, please send me an email at with your name, blog URL, a photo of you, a photo of him and a brief description on why you'd like to showcase your guy! If you enjoyed reading this feature, be sure to check out the first eight editions! I'll be back in November with five more stylish ladies and their guys behind the camera!

The green lady

Michigan is so full of ancient mysteries, local legends, unexplained phenomena and haunted cemeteries. I know that the number one reason you all follow along this blog is to take part in my crazy adventures (riiiight, let's just pretend for this week, at least!) and so you're all just going to be so frightened with the spooky adventures that I am going to risk my life for. Ooooooh!

There is an urban legend in Comstock Park, just 30 minutes east of our quaint little beach town. It's about an apparition of a woman in a green Victorian-style dress, observed kneeling and weeping at the grave of a child, in the Mill Creek Cemetery (a.k.a. Lamoreaux Cemetery). She is lovingly named The Green Lady. People have searched everywhere and nobody is able to come up with anything on her or this creepy cemetery.

(blazer - thrifted | socks, floral zip top - urban outfitters

This cemetery is a unique one. It's hidden from view, and there is no road to it, only old stone stairs up a hill. It is very overgrown. Once inside the cemetery, there are graves in the side of the hill, scattered way into the woods, in some very odd places. It is not a large cemetery. People have been told it is abandoned. Most of the gravestones date back to the 1800's. We did locate a grave of a child all by itself. I wonder if that is the one she is supposedly seen kneeling by? The cemetery itself is not marked at all, no signs or anything. - Dave, Grand Rapids Area Paranormal Enthusiasts via Weird Michigan.

After reading about this urban legend, it was such an adventure to map out this cemetery, climb up the old creepy stone stairs and come upon this creepy old cemetery on the top of a hill in a very hidden spot. I found the stand alone child's gravestone, the very gravestone that is said to be haunted by The Green Lady. Ooooh! I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight! I'll be tossing and turning all night..! ;)

A secret trail

This isn't exactly what I had in mind for this dress, but it all comes out in the wash - right? I wanted to go to a pumpkin patch, but Brett and I already bought pumpkins.. and I really wanted to wear this dress today! Teehee. So instead, I went to this very very secret random park on the way to the city. And I pulled into this back lot.. and started taking some pictures (no Brett today, boo!) and I was so freaked for some reason! I heard some rustling in the bushes and sprinted back to my car. Haha! Halloween must be coming.. oooooh!

So, I'm sure a lot of you have heard if you follow my twitter, but I've been interviewing with this company for a while now. I had my.. fourth interview today and I wasn't at all expecting it, but after the interview, they offered me a full time position as a graphic designer!! I think she could tell I wanted to scream.. because I was like.. insanely excited. Hahaha! I sprinted back to my car, in these heels, with my phone glued to my ear telling Brett, "I got the job, I got the job!!!!" Haha! I'm speechless. I mean, honestly. And I get to stay in Michigan - that's such a dream come true! Thanks to everyone for the congrats and everything! It means so much! I'll keep you updated on how it's all going! I know this is so corny, but I went from being this awful high school student with a bad attitude to graduating from college with the excellence award and landing an amazing career. Dreams do come true, guys!

I went and bought a few more autumn-inspired items tonight - F21 has such a great selection right now. I bought an orange silky-like top and cardigan, a yellow hat and a large chunky brown belt. So cute. Starting tomorrow, I have a week full of halloween-inspired posts - spooky stories, local urban legends and more! I'm so excited. I've been planning this for a while. I've been flipping through our Weird Michigan book trying to come up with the perfect posts! I can't wait! Enjoy your weekend, everyone! I know I will!

Robinette's Apple Haus

Brett and I headed out to my favorite place ever to go in the autumn, Robinette's Apple Haus & Gift Barn! It's so cute - I love going every single year. They have an amazing apple orchard, bakery, cider bar, gift shop and spiderweb shaped corn maze! Plus, there is a wonderful path through the woods that you can walk and see all of the pretty autumn colors!

I thought this darling apple print skirt from ModCloth would fit our little adventure perfectly! The print is green and brown apples, but it has a black elastic band so I thought a simple black tank and flats would go great with the red cardigan! If it didn't have the black band, I probably wouldn't have thought to wear black with this outfit, but I liked the end result! Especially because my purse matched perfectly today. I never change purses so if I'm in brown, I'm still totting around my black purse! Hehe.

(granny smith chic skirt - c/o modcloth | tank, skimmer flats, purse - urban outfitters
cardigan - the limited | twisting tree ring - c/o modcloth)

We got some hot cider from the cider bar, bought a half gallon of cider to bring home (they make their own there, yum!) and Brett got some peanut brittle and I chowed down on a caramel apple (my third one of the season, geez!) I love autumn food! We got some pictures by the giant apple and wandered off into the apple orchard for a bit. The weather is definitely cooling down a bit! It was only in the 50's today!

We didn't stay too long because we were in a time crunch due to band practice. Mmhmm, that's right! We have three songs written.. well.. two and a half? It's with our friends Jeremy (guitar/singing) and Jesse (bass) - I'm playing guitar/singing. Brett is drumming! Time flies by when we practice - I'm having so much fun. I can't wait until we have enough songs down to record and play a show! Well, see ya tomorrow! I have to post every day for the rest of the month in order to get all of my planned outfit posts done! Eeep!
