A field by the river

We have finally started to see a bit of warm spring weather lately! It's been lovely. I'm so ready to say goodbye to my green parka. Even Brett said he was tired of seeing it. Haha! Last weekend, we took a trip down these railroad tracks out to the river. It was so windy, so we took shelter in this little field! I love how the colors of the grass fit with my bag and shoes! I absolutely love wind, but I'm more of a warm wind gal. With the sun being out though, I can't complain. Spring is here.

So this is my third item I've styled for my spring fever challenge with Lee and Birch. I chose a white long-sleeve top that had such pretty detailing at the top. I knew this top would go perfectly with any type of bottom I wanted. I'm in love with floral shorts lately. I want every pair I see! And saying that, I accidentally purchased these shorts twice... I know, I know. It was online and I didn't recognize that I already had them, so I've decided to just give the other pair away! So if you'd like them, they are size medium, just leave me a comment here!

I'm going to start listing my outfit items at the bottom, in separate lines, so they are easier to read and click on if you're interested! You'll be seeing this darling bag soon on a few bloggers, Syd from The Daybook and Lauren from Busy Bee Lauren. Frock Candy is sending it around to each of us and whoever styles it best gets to keep it. I love style challenges! I had a hard time styling it a bit because I honestly don't have anything else this color, so it was definitely a challenge, but a fun challenge!

I'm super excited for Friday tomorrow. We have dinner plans with my parents and on Saturday we're going to a show in Lansing that Brett wants to see! Hoping to find something day-trip-ish to do on Saturday too before the show. Every Sunday, we've been taking one room in our apartment and spring cleaning it, so this weekend we have the guest bedroom and the west wing hallway. Brett always picks on me because I always call the sections of our apartment the west wing or the east wing! Hehe. Have a great weekend!

Hackley and Hume House

Now that the busiest week of my life is over, I'm back up to my old adventures. Today I headed to a town just north, where I grew up, to head to their downtown area. I tend to resist going back to my hometown because I just couldn't wait to get out, but they do have a lot of history there that I absolutely adore. There are few things that will bring me back home and these houses are one of them. I've loved these houses since I was a kid. Whenever we'd pass them, I would just stare in awe at how amazingly beautiful they are. So, blog readers, you get to experience the beauty today... of the Hackley and Hume homes!

A quick back story... they were built in the 1800's and are perfect examples of Queen Anne architecture. The Hackley and Hume Houses were the home of the town's most famous lumber baron, Charles Hackley and his business partner, Thomas Hume. The families shared the middle barn (called City Barn) and it was used for horses, equipment and two coachmen who had living quarters on the second floor. Walking inside of the homes is like... going back into time. They restored the Hackley House to it's 1890 appearance and it's just stunning. The wood carvings and stained glass windows take your breath away.

(remarkable insight dress - c/o modcloth | tights - target
blowfish nice flats - c/o shop ruche | weaving dreams bag - le mode accessories)

This darling dress from ModCloth reminded me of something a woman would wear in the 1800's, so I thought it would be fun to style it up at this location! Even Brett thought my outfit went right along with our theme! This woven bag from Le Mode Accessories is going around to each of the girls in the Delightful Dozen, so watch for it next on Veronika from Tick Tock Vintage. I just purchased the tights and I thought the floral print was supposed to go up each side of your leg, but instead it wrapped around! I love them so much. Target had some insane sales... $3.50 for tights! I bought seven pairs today! Oh boy!

I explored the homes for a while and even the surrounding homes in this historic district. I creeped around this historic home for sale... and was in love. It was the wrong neighborhood, but the perfect house. I just can't wait to someday buy a historic home. It's such a dream. I'd love to be able to tell people about who lived in my house a hundred years ago. That would be so amazing! I've been holding out for the perfect one. It'll come along someday. I hope.

Meetup with The Velvet Bird

Hi everyone! I've had the busiest week of my life and it's almost midnight and I'm totally zonked, but I had to pop in real quick and give you an update of my meet up with Vanessa from The Velvet Bird! Vanessa is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Her husband is touring right now and she's along for the ride! I'm so jealous how she is able to meet up with so many lovely bloggers, already three girls from the Delightful Dozen alone! Lucky girl. Brett and I met up with her and her husband, his band and some of their friends for a thai dinner! We dropped the boys off to the show and went for coffee and talked blogging and marriage. We hit it off right away and I already consider her an amazing friend. So fun. Now before my face falls on the keyboard from exhaustion, I'm going to sign off here. Thanks everyone for tuning into my radio segment today (it was local and only 10 minutes, so you didn't miss much if you missed it!) but it was such a rush. Okay, phew. Have a great Friday everyone!

ps: It was freezing! There was no way we were taking off our coats.

Antwerp Fashion Show

In the coming months ahead, Brett has my every weekend booked with show after show of punk rock music (not complaining, I love music as much as he does!) but tonight he literally could not say no when I asked him to attend a fashion show with me! It was put on by Lamb, a local shop in Grand Rapids. It was called Antwerp: A Fashion Journey and had looks inspired by the Antwerp Six. The Antwerp Six refers to a group of influential designers who graduated from Antwerp's Royal Academy in the 80's. It was a fun theme; something totally fresh and unique!

Brett and I made a date out of it and ate dinner downtown. Then we headed over to The Bob where the show was being held! We had our own table and it was fun to sit and people watch. Being a fashion blogger and not knowing many fashion people here... it was interesting to see how many stylish people Grand Rapids holds. Who would have thought, right? I went with a borrowed dress from my lovely friend, Kate from Postcards From. It was the perfect amount of dressy + me combined. Velvet and floral... maybe a new favorite?

I'll be posting a lot this month and next, I'm thinking. I'm so behind. My closet looks like a tornado went through it and I have at least ten unopened packages of things I need to organize. Plus, I just spent way too much money at Forever 21 during the 100% proceeds to Japan day, so that package should be arriving any day. I'm officially on a shopping and food ban. Well... not all food, of course. Just too much food. Ban on too much food. Makes sense, right? Well, I better scurry off to bed. I have a lovely giveaway coming tomorrow from ThreadSence!

Goodbye, winter!

I am so happy we are finally done with winter. This winter felt like the longest one, ever! I was so burnt out with the awful drives and freezing temperatures. It's always a celebration when winter is done because that means I survived a winter with my Beetle... and this fashion blog! Running a style blog during winter can be such a daunting task sometimes. Now I'm having an especially hard time in this transitional period because I'm bored with my winter stuff... but it's still too cold to bust out my real spring-y stuff. What a tough life I lead.

I actually took these photos before we took our day-trip to see lighthouses, so hey, you get another lighthouse. This is hometown lighthouse, so we see this bad boy everyday. We're spoiled. This was the first day we had truly amazing temperatures. Sixty-three degrees and warm wind. That's all I need in life. I received this darling dress from Dear Beatrice via the Delightful Dozen! She's a designer for Tulle and is sending this beauty around to the girls in the DD! I'm so excited to see how they style it up. It was such a comfortable dress and I love floral sleeved dresses. Of course!

(dress - tulle designed by dear beatrice via delightful dozen
tights - urban outfitters | naked flats - c/o blowfish shoes)

Okay, a few things to catch myself up. 1) You can enter to win these red Naked flats from Blowfish Shoes at my giveaway post here. 2) I've been featured as an Inspirational Ohgler on the Ohgle blog! 3) I'm so behind on my email, so if you're waiting to hear back from me... I'm super sorry and will be catching up ASAP. 4) I have the busiest week of my life this week. I have a fashion show tomorrow, meeting up with The Velvet Bird on Wednesday, band practice Thursday, Minus the Bear show on Friday, second-to-last Tall Ships show on Saturday and I might be able to breathe on Sunday. Phew!

The Sable Point Lighthouses

I took a spontaneous day trip on Saturday to explore two lighthouses I haven't been to yet! I've decided that I'm such an old person. It was honestly the best day ever... and it was spent traveling up the coast of Lake Michigan searching for lighthouses! But I had so much fun. I absolutely love lighthouses and living in Michigan is perfect, because we have hundreds. First, I headed up to Shelby, Michigan to look for Little Sable Point Lighthouse. This was was located at the end of a dead-end drive in a state park. It was so tall! I loved it!

It was such perfect weather. It was so warm and the sunshine was perfect for a day of adventure. I love that my car is always full of sand from my trips I take. Living in Michigan suits me so perfectly. I kept thinking about it all day long... how much I love living here. I have so many trips and plans for this summer - just in this state alone! I can't wait to take all of them.

(belt - forever 21 | top - express | blowfish nice floral flats - c/o shop ruche)
shorts - american apparel | cross town beauty mini cross bag - shop ruche
cardigan - h&m | sunglasses - forever 21)

After that, I headed up another hour north to Ludington to check out Big Sable Lighthouse! I pulled into the state park and parked... and got out and saw a sign that said "Lighthouse 1.8 miles". But you couldn't drive to it - it was all on foot! I was so shocked! I've never been to a lighthouse where you couldn't just drive right up to it! So I set out on foot, through the dunes, 2 miles to get to the lighthouse. It felt like such an adventure!

I kept seeing signs for "Historic Shipwreck" and I had to go check it out. It's a shipwreck that washed right up on shore in 2004! You could see a few elements of the wreck right on the beach. How awesome is that?! Then finally, in the distance, I saw the lighthouse. It's just so much more fun when you travel so far to reach something like this... and you finally see it. Like the time I explored the secret lighthouse last summer. So. much. fun.

The lighthouse was gorgeous. It was amazing to see to see the lighthouse on a little pointe of Lake Michigan where you see the lake from the west and north. After that, I explored the downtown strip of Ludington and ate dinner at a cute Italian restaurant. What a seriously fun day... I can't wait to start traveling more now that the weather is so lovely! Have a great week, everyone!
