Meet Mindy of States

I'm so excited to feature Mindy White, singer of the band States. I checked out States last spring after I heard members of Copeland and Lydia formed a new band and I've loved them ever since. So when I had the opportunity to see them play, meet her and snap some photos of her outfit, I jumped at the chance! States played amazing and Mindy was the biggest sweetheart ever! We laughed while taking outfit shots and it was like hanging out with a good friend! Her show outfit was really cute and totally something I'd wear - a sleeved floral dress? How perfect, right? I also thought her personalized leather bomber jacket was so cute along with her leopard print details (nails and studded flats!)

I loved hearing about some of Mindy's favorite brands - Jeffrey Campbell, Betsey Johnson, Alice & Olivia, BB Dakota, Miu Miu and so many more. For fall trends, Mindy is loving stacked bracelets, flatform shoes, capes (female sherlocks!), sequins, military jackets, fringe, prints on pants and jeans, lace, thigh-high stockings and socks, total Cher Horowitz in "Clueless" 90s style and 50's dresses like Lucille Ball and Judy Garland. She sounds just like a fashion blogger - right?

If you guys haven't heard States yet, be sure to check them out. You can hear some of their new music on their facebook page right now too. Timebomb is so so super good. The new album, Room to Run, releases on October 18th - so be sure to pre-order a copy or pick it up in a couple of weeks! I've had the chance to preview the entire album and it's amazing. I love it. You can also keep up with Mindy on Twitter! It was a great opportunity to meet her and I know you guys will love her (if you don't already!)

White road

Yay! Jacket weather! I'm too excited! I'm especially excited because I worked with Element to style up this particular coat. I went for a coat that would stand on it's own - stylewise - because most of the time I'm wearing my coats over dresses with some simple tights. Last winter, I kept bundling up in this huge green parka and this year I wanted something a bit more stylish!

It's really lightweight so I can easily wear on cooler autumn days, but I'm excited to pair sweaters and mittens with it when the snow hits (not that I'm looking forward to that anytime soon!) My favorite features on this coat are the big pockets for my hands, the gray and black combination and the length. I love a longer length coat, so my cardigans don't sneak out!

Be sure to head over to Element to check out their latest look book! I love their autumn stylings... especially the mix of plaids and army greens! I'll be back tomorrow with a really fun set of photos from last weekend when I got to interview an amazing lady. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know who! ;)

Past autumn favorites

Yay! Autumn! I'm in love with this season! Most of my favorite outfits and photos are from fall, so I'm really excited! I have some fun plans for this year, but one thing I love is looking back on all of my favorite autumn outfits from the past. This is the first season where I have two years to look back on, since my blog is now two years old! Wee! Enjoy!

Autumn Featured Blogger

For my autumn featured blogger, I'm so excited to feature Veronika of Girl and Closet. This gal is incredibly sweet and I adore her blog. Her outfits are super inspiring, her photography is something I strive for and I love the details about her personal life she showcases in her blog. She supports so many girls in the blogging community and I really admire that about her. I love seeing her comments come through my inbox because they always brighten my day. Enjoy this wonderful interview and be sure to check out her blog!

1. What made you decide to start a personal style blog?

I had just spent a year working from home on my own business, which meant I was often living in nothing more than tights & cardigans. Needless to say, I was craving an outlet for fashion -big time! I spent most of my free time pouring over fashion blogs: Jen Loves Kev, Strawberry Koi & Selective Potential!
I was so inspired by what I was seeing and decided to jump on
the bandwagon. And oh my goodness... I’m so glad that I did because I absolutely love being a part of the fashion blogging community.

2. What do you love most about your town?

Ah, there is so much I love about our town. It was actually voted as one of the world's most livable cities. I’m so proud! I always marvel at how nature-rich our community is. We are surrounded by mountains, forests, ocean and loads of historic charm. I love that we have trains running through our town - haha, so blogger appropriate, right?! And a personal fave is the old heritage homes that have been converted into tea shops & restaurants. Adorable! I absolutely love were we live.

3. What is another passion of yours besides fashion?

Photography! I love planning shoots, running around with my camera and then rushing home to edit my photos. I’m often doing that instead of going out on a Saturday night - oh dear! I also love to cook & eat. I’m always dreaming up new recipes and I place a lot of importance on healthy & organic food. And I'm a huge yoga enthusiast.

4. What are some of your current favorite blogs?

I love to read & gently stalk: Jen Loves Kev, M Loves M, Strawberry Koi, Bonjour Babydoll, Delightful Dozen, Tick Tock Vintage and Selective Potential!

5. A favorite band/musician?

Ah, so many. I’m such a huge music fan. It’s a constant companion of mine. Currently, my most played bands and musicians are: Empire Of The Sun, The XX, The Cure, Handsome Furs, Shout Out Louds, Stars and She & Him.

6. Tell us a little bit about what you do as a freelance photographer!

I’d love to! I adore photography and I especially enjoy photographing people, so most of my jobs are centered around that. I do creative portraiture, fashion photography, some acting head-shots and band promos. I’ve always been super entrepreneurial and I actually run a couple of businesses. I always seem to have my hands full, which is exactly how I like it.

7. Where do you get inspiration for your style?

Style blogs are at the top of my inspiration list. I love seeing what other girls are wearing. And I also get a lot of my inspiration from TV shows; I would happily swap clothes with Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl or Carrie Bradshaw of Sex & The City. Oh, and I also religiously stalk my J.Crew catalogue and the ModCloth look-books!

8. What's your favorite thing to do with your husband?

I love doing the simple things! We always have so much fun together and after 13 years he's still my best friend. I love that! After a long day, I love walking down to the ocean with Martin and enjoying a little picnic, or just cuddling in front of the fireplace with our pooch wrestling to get in between us - that’s an absolute fave too!

9. What are your future dream goals?

I feel like I’ve accomplished so many of my goals in the last few years: finishing my business administration program, starting a business, buying a home, getting married. Now I feel like I’m just trying to get settled & enjoy where I am in life. Having said that though, growing my involvement in the fashion industry is definitely my long term career goal; it’s such a genuine passion!

10. Any tips for new style bloggers starting out?

Be kind and be genuine. Also, don’t be afraid to connect with other bloggers that you admire. It’s a very supportive community! I’m so thankful for the wonderful gals I’ve had the opportunity to meet & connect with. I would also say that having great blog design, a solid camera, and quality content are at the top of the list. And it's important to blog about the things that you truly love - remember to stay true to who you are!

I hope you all enjoyed getting to know Veronika a little bit more! She's an amazing and talented person and I'm excited for this girl's future! Be sure to head over to her blog and follow along. You can also follow along with her on Twitter! And... if you enjoyed reading this feature, be sure to check out my first seven featured bloggers!

Palomita Reserve

It's official! Summer is over. It's so amazing to drive down the highway and see so much color. I feel like it all happens so fast! You blink your eyes and all of the trees are red, yellow and orange. It's so pretty. Naturally, I feel the need to fit in with my changing surroundings. I pushed all of my autumn clothes to the front of my closet and it's so fun to see how my closet looks so much like I'm driving down the highway! So many autumn colors. Aren't they the best, though?

The weather has been so mild and perfect for walking lately, so Brett and I headed over to the Palomita Reserve! It's a land conservancy that harbors natural communities that are native to West Michigan. "Palomita", which is Spanish for little dove is a perfect name for the land because historically this is a staging area for millions of doves. It's the perfect place to come and do a little bird watching!

When Brett and I stopped in Chicago on my way home from fashion week, he shopped at Reckless Records... while I hopped into Urban Outfitters. As soon as I spotted these pants, I picked them up. I absolutely love the color. Plus, they are so comfortable and I had a few compliments saying how 'classy' they looked. Double win! It's funny looking at the picture of them, because they are meant to be capris and I wear them as pants! I'm a shorty!

Everyone else super ready for the weekend? I am! Friday, my band is playing a house show which I'm really looking forward to! Saturday, we're headed to downtown Grand Rapids to explore ArtPrize and then off to Lansing later in the evening to see a band and interview an amazing girl for the blog (more details to come next week!) But before the weekend begins, I'll be posting on my autumn featured blogger tomorrow... so stay tuned!

Renegade Craft Fair

On my way home from fashion week, I flew into Chicago and Brett picked me up to take me home. I knew Elsie and Rachel from Red Velvet would be in town for the Renegade Craft Fair, so I had to make a pit stop to see them! I was so excited when I saw their booth! It was so fun to see all of the cute dresses, accessories, clutches and paintings I see online all the time. Plus, they were both the sweetest and I absolutely loved getting the chance to finally meet them.

Brett and I loved the Renegade Craft Fair. It was the first one we've ever been to and everything was amazing. Brett loved all of the screen printing booths - t-shirts, bags, everything! We were so amazed at this "young people" version of a craft fair. I wonder if when we're old the craft fairs will all be like this one!

I also got a really cute dress, clutch and turban from Red Velvet to pass around to the girls in the Delightful Dozen. I'm so excited to see how the girls will style them up. I'm honestly so inspired by Elsie and Rachel (and the whole Red Velvet team!) They are so accomplished and work so hard to make their goals and dreams a reality! Brett was laughing because I was so over the moon to see them. My next goal is to make it to the shop in Springfield, MO!

A hint of autumn

Ever since I returned home to Michigan after fashion week, I've been baffled at how much changed while I was gone! I left in the summer and returned to full blown autumn! I absolutely love this season more than anything. Many of you have said that my autumn posts are your favorite and I can't wait for this year's posts. I sat down and wrote out so many ideas and fun adventures. It's going to be an amazing season.

I received this so cute wrap bracelet from Lee La La! I love the vintage-inspired button. All of her pieces are super unique and girly - just what I love! She also has a blog that you can check out! I've been holding this dress hostage from last winter. Brett and I took a trip to Ann Arbor and stopped into one of my favorite stores, Ragstock, and I picked it up. I love the peter pan collar, but for some reason this dress was challenging to style! I'm so picky with my outfits matching my settings and this one just didn't really give off a certain feel. Haha!

It's always really refreshing coming back from fashion week and getting back to my normal posting. I always feel inspired when I get home to ramp up my blog, which is perfect, because autumn posts are my favorite and I want them to be the best! Summers are amazing, but sometimes it's so hard to have a personal style blog because you feel guilty just throwing on a simple dress... but that's all you feel like wearing when it's so hot and muggy outside! I'm looking forward to layers and tights and boots and socks. Eee!
