Apple blossoms

When Brett and I saw the apple orchards were blooming, it was almost too good to be true. Like... a Selective Potential heaven. On the south side of the road, the pink trees were blooming. On the north side, the white trees were blooming. So naturally, I planned outfits for both! I've been here before actually, in this very same field picking apples a couple of autumns ago. It's so amazing how different a place can look in each season. So pretty.

I got this dress last autumn in hopes to wear it to the apple orchard. But with it being a peach color, I just could never get myself to wear it when the trees were all orange and red! So with spring apple blossoms, this dress couldn't be more perfect. It's so romantic! Plus, I love the apple print. Of course, I also wore an apple print skirt in this very same field. Am I too predictable or what? At least I'm consistent...?

It was pretty crazy looking at these photos and realizing I'm not a blonde anymore! I know I haven't been for a while, but this is crazy. My stylist cut out the last few blonde pieces a couple of months ago, but my hair looks so dark in these photos. I love having my complete natural color because it's so much more healthy and maintenance-free, but I'm definitely itching to lighten it up for spring. I'm such a chicken though when it comes to hair, so I probably won't do a thing. Haha!

Any plans for the upcoming weekend? We have band practice tomorrow night. We're done writing three new songs... and working on a fourth! I'm super excited and loving the new stuff. Saturday, I'm hoping to head out to Kalamazoo for the day. There's something I've wanted to do there for a long time... and then there's a band playing that night so it kind of works out perfect. I'll share next week, of course!

The pink trees

This year, spring is coming dangerously close to becoming my new autumn. I would compare what we're going through right now to my Peak of autumn post I did last fall. We're right in the middle of this perfect season. The sunshine, blooming trees, yards filled with pink petals, warm breezes. I'm pretty much in heaven. I love so much dressing to fit my surroundings. I hope I did this setting some justice. It was breathtakingly pretty.

I've had this skirt for a couple of years now. I wore it two springs ago in my post, Lovers Lane. Sometimes I find it so hard to believe I've been blogging for as long as I have. I'm still always so proud of my past posts too and always look to them for inspiration for upcoming seasons. I just planned all of my April posts today and I'm so excited. It's going to be a fun month on the blog filled with spring, April showers and fun spots around Michigan. I also have a bedroom and blog studio tour planned!

I bought this top so long ago now! I do this all the time. I buy items in the wrong season and then hoard them until I find the perfect moment to wear it. Believe me, I'm already hoarding autumn items I know will look perfect against the changing leaves. I'm excited to start wearing more spring/summer clothes though. Throwing on a dress and some flats and hopping on our scooters is pretty much perfection.

After living in the city for about a month now, I'm definitely missing our little beach town. It was just filled with pretty scenery from Lake Michigan, to overgrown fields, forgotten barns and our historic lighthouse. So, I'm really happy this apple orchard is in our new town. I thought living here would give my blog an urban edge, but I'm really just a nature girl at heart. This orchard makes me feel a little bit more at home.

Reeds Lake

Brett and I took a little stroll this week by Reeds Lake. I love having unique places to explore and learn about now that we're living in Grand Rapids. I pretty much exhausted all of the fun spots and history that Grand Haven had to offer, so being in a fresh city is really inspiring! Reeds Lake is a little gem on the east side. Lots of benches, overlooks, gardens and fishing decks.

One of my favorite things I learned about Reeds Lake is the late Ramona Park. It was an amusement park from 1897 to 1955. A passenger steamer used to ferry passengers around the lake to different spots. The most popular ride used to be a double wooden roller-coaster called The Jack Rabbit Derby Racer. There was also a theater called the Point Paulo Resort that several Vaudeville stars called "one of their favorite spots" on their theater tours. It was located right on the shore of Reed Lake. It held plays, musicals, silent films, talkies and tons of entertainers like the Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton. Isn't that amazing? I love the history here.

I received this dress from Kyla of Blue Collar Catwalk via the Delightful Dozen. It was so easy to throw on with a matching pair of tights and comfy moccasins. I've been all about easy style lately. I've been on-the-go constantly with being busy at work and working on our new apartment, so it's nice to feel comfortable throughout the day. I'm loving this weather though and I'm really excited to get out more spring dresses and bare legs!

What are you guys up to this weekend? I'm attending a little fashion show in town with a few fellow bloggers tomorrow evening. I'm really excited. Saturday, I want to take a day-trip somewhere with Brett. We really need a complete day off. I think getting out of the house and out of town will help. Everything is in bloom right now, so I'd love to scout out some pretty spring destinations and make a day of it! Enjoy your weekend!

TxSC Symposium

On the last day in Texas, I attended the TxSC Social Media Symposium. We finally had some nice weather. I was so thankful to see the sun and a few trees blooming! It was a great day of networking and learning. I listened in on quite a few of the panels and even had the opportunity to speak on one myself. I spoke with Turi of ModCloth on brands working with bloggers. I'm not much of a public speaker, but I had a lot of fun!

I was planning on just wearing the floral dress, but with the cooler temperatures, I paired this new polka dot top I just bought with it. I wouldn't have normally thought to put these two together, but I liked the way it turned out! I still love mixing patterns. There are just so many options to remix outfits when pattern-mixing. It's definitely been one of my favorite things to try style-wise lately.

(Veronika of Girl and Closet and I)

Our workshop was more geared toward brands than bloggers. Most of them were interested in different ways they could work with bloggers rather than your typical banner ad or clothing sponsorship. My very basic advice was... bloggers need an incentive to want to work with a company. Unless they are your best friend, they probably aren't going to want to work for free. And they shouldn't have to! It doesn't have to be money or clothes all of the time. I've worked with several sponsors because of a fun opportunity. Like my collaboration with Jess LC a couple of years ago was one of my favorite memories ever. I wasn't paid for modeling for her shoot, but I made a good friend and I loved the photos/videos from the shoot and the day spent doing it. It has to be mutually beneficial in some way shape or form for both parties involved!

Past spring favorites

Even though we've been experiencing summer temperatures lately, it's only the first day of spring tomorrow! In preparation for the new season, I thought I'd do another roundup of some of my past favorite looks. Autumn and spring are my two favorite times to blog. The inspiration and creativity just comes so naturally thanks to the beauty outside! I'm really excited to visit all of our regular haunts - wildflower trails, fields of flowers and hopefully throw in a few new surprises too. Enjoy the looks from last year... and if you're interested in my favorite spring looks from 2010, go here!

The Grand River

Michigan pretty much just skipped over spring and went straight to summer this past week! It's been so refreshing. I came home from Texas to amazing warmth! I still have two more posts to do on the Texas Style Council Conference, but I thought I'd take a break to showcase a pretty spring dress. I felt so silly walking outside in this dress in March, but it's honestly been that warm. 75 degrees and higher! I'm in love.

This weekend, Brett and I went and saw Jim Gaffigan - he was so funny! We scooted a lot. We finished recarpeting and painting my new studio, which I'm currently sitting in. It's perfect. A little teeny, but I love it. I'll take pictures soon. Today, we got our taxes done, took a little walk downtown and grabbed ice-cream with our friends. I'm loving living back in the city. (Even if I did miss the beach a little bit these past few warm days!)

I absolutely love the Grand River that runs through Grand Rapids. It's so pretty at night when all of the bridges are lit up. I used to love scooting across the bridges when I lived here in college. I know it's silly, but I grew up being by water constantly. Brett and I both grew up in beach towns... so it's a little sad being in the city and not being able to drive five minutes to the lake. So it's nice having the river... that flows all the way to our beach town and out into Lake Michigan.
