Wealthy Theater

When I heard that one of our local theaters was playing The Exorcist the night before Halloween, I knew we had to go! That movie is seriously one of the only movies that legitimately scares me, like insanely. It's just so creepy! I was especially excited it was at the Wealthy Theatre, which is right in my neighborhood. Eric and I grabbed dinner with our friend, Laura, at the Electric Cheetah. We all got different versions of their homemade mac & cheese. Oh yum. It's been so dark, cold and gray here, so comfort food sounded amazing. Afterwards, we walked down the street to check out the movie!

I love this little theater. I've been here several times for fashion shows, one time for a Christmas burlesque show (ha!) and they play movies every Tuesday. I really need to start making it a Tuesday night tradition to go see an older movie here. The theater was introduced in 1911 for vaudeville and live theater, and later became a movie house. When vaudeville declined in the area, the doors were shut and it was used as a warehouse for an aircraft company. It opened back up in the 20s and resumed playing movies until the 60s. In the 60s, it shifted to foreign films and shut back down in the 70s. It sat decaying for 25 years until our neighborhood association launched a campaign for its restoration. It opened back up in 1998 and has been open ever since!

So I've been getting a lot of feedback from you guys lately saying you like seeing me in more of my casual outfits, so here I am! To be honest, I wear jeans quite a lot! I know that seems odd because I'm constantly in dresses and skirts on the blog, but sometimes I get the attitude like "this outfit isn't blog-worthy", you know? I'm going to start ignoring myself when I think that and take photos anyway. I've been trying to collect a few more fall/winter coats because this weather is getting colder and colder by the day! I can't believe we're only a day away from November. Time seriously flies! I'm not going to lie though - I'm a tad bit excited for winter. I'm hoping we have an insanely white Christmas. I started my winter bucket list and I'm really going to try and get out more and not let my debbie-winter-downer mood get me down!

Well, I hope you guys have a safe and happy Halloween tomorrow! I don't have huge plans other than band practice with Circle Maybe and perhaps karaoke later in the night. And those of you being affected by Sandy, stay safe and dry! I'm keeping all of my east coast friends in my thoughts. If you're interested in donating, you can go to the Red Cross website and donate $10! It goes toward disaster relief and helping those in need. See you tomorrow! xo

Hell, Michigan

This past weekend, Eric and I went to Hell. Haha, really! It's a real town in Michigan! It's honestly the smallest little town (just a tad bigger than Central Park). If you looked down for a second, you might miss it while driving past. Hell is really only a couple of buildings - a small general store called Hell in a Handbasket, an ice-cream parlor called Screams Ice Cream and a dive bar called the Dam Site Inn. Hell Creek runs through the town and over a dam. Dam in Hell, haha! This town provides literally nothing but kitsch. We spent a couple of hours there eating at the bar, walking Winny around looking at the terribly corny signs and getting ice-cream at the Creamatory. I have to admit though, it was a fun experience!

Literally the only reason to go to Hell is if you're as corny as I am or you just want to say you've been there. BUT! If you're interested, here is a fun list of things to do: be Mayor of Hell for the Day (yes, you just write your name on the whiteboard), get married in the Hell Chapel, play putt-putt golf, eat ice-cream, shop for Halloween all-year round, mail a letter from Hell, eat a gravy bowl at the dive bar and lock your love on the bridge (yes, you can bring your own padlock and key and lock your love on the bridge; you'll even receive a certificate from the mayor!) Why didn't Eric and I do this?! Also, we spotted a chapel and were like... what is this? Apparently you can get married in Hell and take your picture outside in the "til death do us part" face hole sign! Hah!

I actually found out about Hell, Michigan from my beloved Weird Michigan book. There was a wall mural in the book that I couldn't wait to take photos by. I've actually been thinking about and planning on visiting here for years. We searched all over Hell (which is literally like... looking around standing in one spot) and couldn't find the mural. Then, I spotted a wall where the building was the same exact shape and noticed they moved one of the signs and covered the rest of the wall with this wood paneling. If you peek through the panels, you can still see it. I was so bummed! Here's how it looked originally.

Well... that was our adventure in Hell! Also a fun fact? To get to another town called Paradise, Michigan and back down to Hell, it's almost exactly 666 miles. Oooooh! Check out a video here that the Travel Channel did on Hell a few years ago. I hope you all had a super fun Halloween weekend! I'll be back for more spoooooky posts and a chance for you to win your own adventure tomorrow on the blog. See you then! xo

Bruce Mansion

On Saturday night, Eric and I took a trip out to the east side of Michigan. I've heard stories of this insanely haunted mansion up in Brown City and was dying to see it. I looked it up online and saw the photos of the house and read a few reports about hauntings here. We got off an exit off the main highway and headed north. It felt like we drove forever on this back, dark country road. I read it was located on the Burnside Corners. As soon as we reached the mansion, we pulled over to the side of the road. It was like... it came out of nowhere. Just a huge, creepy mansion sitting in the middle of these vast cornfields. Leaves were rustling in the yard, the sun was setting beyond the cornstalks and a huge gust of wind blew through us as we approached the house.

As we approached, we noticed lights were flickering in the attic of the mansion. Apparently legend has it, there is a ghost of a man haunting the attic. Residents would always hear his footsteps up there. The house was built in 1876 by a lumber baron, John Bruce. The mansion was supposedly a hot spot for many parties, celebrations and social gatherings in the town. Now, 130 years later, the activity continues. Eric and I spotted a man standing in the front yard, wearing a suit with a top hat. When we tried to approach him to ask him about the history of the house, he just kept looking down... and when we blinked, he was gone. Oh my gosh, we grabbed Winny and ran back to our car and left. I swear... we must have seen the ghost of John Bruce himself!

Hehe! So a couple years ago, I ran a series of "spooky" posts about haunted spots in Michigan on my blog and you guys loved it. So here I am again, up to my old antics! This house was actually located on a corner of probably the busiest part in this tiny town, right next to a gas station. The new owners of the Bruce Mansion actually turned it into "The Dark House" which is a haunted house for kids and families. We were so hoping it was abandoned and we would sneak in somehow. There have been reports of hauntings here and the house was insanely creepy looking. But as soon as we left, we grabbed snacks from the gas station and headed home. Haha! Happy Halloween, everyone!

October wishlist

Here is my October wishlist! Right now I'm just trying to look half as good as my surroundings! I'm loving burnt orange, mustard, brown, plaids and autumnal prints. I'm also looking forward to the future - gray days in November and snowfall in December. So while bringing some of my autumn favorites forward, I'm also trying to come up with a few winter staples. Soft pinks, black, gray, mint, maroon, navy and beige are the colors I have written down. I'm coveting a few simple sweaters to throw over a pair of skinny jeans along with these adorable Piperlime boots. I'm also hoping to start decorating my apartment more for the seasons and this doormat from ModCloth would be too cute. I recently had the opportunity to try out an online lingerie shop called True&Co. You find your perfect fit through a 2-minute quiz (which was actually pretty fun), choose 3 favorites and then an expert sends you two additional options. You pay for the ones you keep and you return the ones you don't want. I loved the service and found five amazing new bras. This one here is next on my wishlist! If you're interested in True&Co, you can use the promo code TIEKA15 for 15% off your purchase. Valid through 10/26 at midnight. What are you guys excited for and loving this month? What are you looking forward to wearing in November?

An autumn barn

I love revisiting my favorite spots each season. I actually took some of my favorite autumn photos last here in this very location. Along the west coast of Michigan, there are just so many pretty fields. It's hard to not take photos in every one! But I swear autumn colors or spring blossoms, freshly fallen snow or rich greens, fields really do make for a pretty setting. I loved having Winny tag along. She went nuts in the field. Rolling around, picking up and carrying around branches, biting the shrubs, the usual.

I love how Winny is just a black blob of blur in these photos - haha! She honestly cracks me up. I can't believe she's going on 12 weeks soon! She just had her first vet visit recently and had pretty bad ear infections in both ears. I felt awful, but they filled them with medicating wax and she's doing a lot better. I just have to go back in four weeks to have a second dose and then she should be healed. I'm also considering a six-week puppy training course - would any of you recommend? I know now is the time I need to be thinking of all of this, but at the same time, she feels so young! She doesn't listen to half the stuff I say. Eric and I have to scream "Winn-ayyy!" in this crazy voice and she finally perks up and listens for two seconds. Haha!

Other than Winny news, not much else is new besides the usual work, blog, eat, sleep, wake up and do it all over again. We're still having constant rain which is putting a huge damper on so many of my autumn ideas. I guess our Indian Summer was shortened to just one day - tomorrow - but who knows if that will even happen. Let's just cross our fingers. I need to figure out a Halloween costume like... now, and pay a trip to the apple orchard for more cider and donuts. I can never get enough! I'm also writing down a lot of goals lately. My biggest ones are to lose the weight I've gained, get back into shape and be able to run a 5k again, stick to my set budget and finish this apartment finally. I have so many frames unhung still and I've been living here... 8 months now. Ah, that's sad!

Pumpkin picking

On the one nice day we've had this autumn (ahem), Eric, Winny and I headed out to the farm market to pick out pumpkins, caramel apples, cider donuts, apple cider and pie pumpkins. This is my favorite place to go every year. I love how they stack the pumpkins, their caramel apples are the best and it's nice to head back to the west side for a little while! The drive out there was insanely gorgeous. The sun was just perfect and golden and the colors were beautiful. I wish every day this month was like this!

This was such a fun day with Winny. We try to wear her out as much as we can during the day, because otherwise at night, she's a terror! So we let her go nuts in a field and help us pick out the best pumpkins. My friend, Lisa, runs a really cute Etsy shop for dogs called Mike Loves Mommy. She has really cute bandanas, bow-ties and rosettes. I requested a chevron bandana for Winny and I love how it turned out. If you have a pup, head over there and check out some of her items! She has the exact chevron one up for sale that Winny has on.

I felt like an actual walking pumpkin in this outfit. I think perhaps I'm taking the "match your surroundings" idea too far? Haha! This is my third styling of my Minnetonka Moccasins. I was just featured in a Blogger Spotlight over on their blog, so be sure to head over and check out all three styles along with a quick interview and what song I have on repeat! I have a couple more fun autumn posts planned for this week... and then I'm moving onto something spooky. If you haven't been around for a while, you're in for a treat! ;)
