Looking back on 2012

Here is my giant recap of 2012! I do this every year... and I always have fun looking back on the year and reflecting. I tried to cut it down to my favorite memories, but this year has been full of insanely good times and also some sad times. I'm excited for the refresh of a new year. Your feedback on my survey has really helped me realize how some of you are feeling and how I can move forward and get back to my roots in 2013. Here's to a happy new year... and to remembering the good from the past year. Note: This post is extremely photo heavy. If you have a slow connection, you've been warned.

Last January, we were finally hit with some winter flurries! It was a beautiful Michigan winter.

I had a super fun opportunity to collaborate with T.V. show, Jane by Design!

In February, Brett and I said goodbye to home in our beach town. I miss it terribly sometimes.

And we moved into a new apartment in the city, in the best neighborhood, close to work and all of our friends.

In March, I traveled to Austin, Texas to speak at the Texas Style Council Conference. My favorite part of the conference was seeing all of the gals I love and spending time with them. It's always so much fun and refreshing to see how amazing they all are in person.

I spoke with Turi of ModCloth on blogger/brand relationships. It was so nerve wracking being up in front of a room full of seriously stylish girls, but it was a fun challenge. I'm glad I had the opportunity to be up there sharing my experience!

After Austin, I came home to the most beautiful spring in Michigan that I could remember. Seriously. Gorgeous.

In April, I had the most insane opportunity to be featured on a digital billboard in the middle of Times Square for Forever 21. I still can't believe this ever happened. Haha!

I attended the Kendall College Forest Floor fashion show with my favorite Michigan blogger gals, Andrea, Kayley, Patricia and Blair. Love these girls.

In May, I was featured in Momentum Magazine for a stylish cycling feature!

In May, Brett and I decided to go our separate ways. We are still the best of friends (as we always were) and still talk every single day. This year has been really hard for both of us, but I know we'll always be there for each other.

I traveled to Chicago to shoot a super fun video with my friends, Nick and Andrew at Superdawg! I'm still waiting on the results, but I know as soon as I get the video back, I'll love it!

I also had the opportunity to host a Madewell Style Sessions in Chicago! It was amazing to meet Jo and so many readers!

I took a fun trip to Saugatuck, Michigan to check out the chain ferry and climb Mount Baldhead. It was nice to finally take a summer day trip.

I had the best opportunity ever to collaborate with Adobe on promoting Photoshop Elements. I traveled to San Francisco to meet the team and to learn all about Elements. It was my first time in California and I loved it. It was such a great, whirlwind weekend.

Eric and I went to my work summer outing at a cottage up north. We both had so much fun hanging out with my colleagues and watching Valentiger play.

In July, Eric surprised me with a super sweet trip up to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. We walked the two miles down the beach to see it! Running back to the car in the dark is one of my favorite summer memories with him.

My band, Circle Maybe, also released our second EP, The Place that I Called Home. It was a really fun summer with these guys recording and playing shows.

Eric and I had the best times this summer together. We became the closest of friends and fell completely in love. It was too soon, we know, we've been told a thousand times, but it happened. And we're happy.

In August, Eric and I got to see one of our favorite Bands, The Head and the Heart at Frederick Meijer Gardens. Such a great outdoor concert.

We took the most amazing trip to the sunrise coast in Michigan. We saw five lighthouses, waterfalls and ate at a haunted saloon. It was my favorite weekend all summer.

I ended up getting quite sick in August. Eric came with me to all of my doctor appointments and dealt with me crying and having panic attacks and everything else that came with it. I appreciated him so much for being there for me.

In September, Eric and I traveled to NYC for fashion week! It was Eric's first time in the city and it was so much fun to take a little time off the fashion aspect and more time exploring with him. I did get to attend FABB and the Lauren Moffatt and By Misha fashion presentations though!

(Eric's first NYC cab-ride experience!)

(We especially loved Bryant Park.)

(And spent a night on a rooftop together overlooking the city. It was perfect.)

I also celebrated my three year blogiversary in September! I can't believe it's been that long already.

In October, I attended our local Style Battle with Blair and Kayley!

Eric and I adopted the sweetest little pup in the world, Winny. She's made my life so much better in just the few months we've had her.

I had the opportunity to be a guest judge for the Little Black Dress party in Kalamazoo, Michigan!

I had another insane opportunity to fly to Houston to do a photo shoot with Francesca's. It was such a whirlwind trip but I loved every second. (By the way, the opportunities I've had this year make my heart so happy. Seriously. I am so blessed and I do not take it for granted, ever.)

Eric and I had so much fun with Winny, in the most perfect autumn ever.

And we ended the month and took a super fun trip to Hell, Michigan and to visit a haunted mansion. Incredibly corny? Yes. One of those memories you'll never forget? Yup.

In November, the standout memory was celebrating Thanksgiving with our three families. My two sides and Eric's one side. It was a busy and incredibly great day.

In December, Eric and I had a blast at my work holiday party. He loved his white elephant gift. ;)

And we made serious progress on our apartment we live in together! I cannot wait to see what 2013 will bring. Honestly? I hope it's not as eventful as 2012. Haha! I loved every single travel experience and opportunity I had, but I'm ready for my personal life to slow down a bit, which I know, obviously it will. It's going to be a good year. I can feel it!! Thanks for sticking around in 2012... and I hope to make 2013 a thousand times better. Love, xo, Tieka

December in Instagram

This month is always fun with Christmas in the air. I loved getting ready for the holidays. The house always feels cozy decorated, we finally got some real snow, everyone is out and about and I was able to spend time with family and friends. I can't complain! I kind of took the month off from outfit posting, but I honestly just needed a refresh. I've been feeling frumpy lately, freezing and stretched too thin. I'm excited to get back on track for the new year!

  • We finally got snow!
  • Eric bought me the most amazing boots for Christmas.
  • Winny looooooves the snow. She goes absolutely nuts.
  • Eric and I at the Winchester; him making fun of me per usual for arguing with him. ;)
  • I've watched a lot of movies in bed lately.
  • Downtown looked amazing decorated for the holidays.
  • Our living room was so cozy this month.
  • Karaoke with one of my best friends, Laura!
  • And I was so excited to finally meet my best friend, Jen's new baby, Stella! She is perfect.

I hope you all have an amazing and safe new year's eve and a happy new year! Eric and I plan on dressing up all fancy and dancing our butts off with friends. I have one more post tomorrow with my recap of 2012, so I'll see you guys tomorrow!

Top ten outfits of 2012

Let's start the 2012 recap off with some of my favorite outfits from the past year! Usually autumn is my strongest season, but I really loved spring and summer this year. I felt like I got a bit more colorful and finally embraced that it's okay to be simple. That's just my style. It's obvious I like florals, belts and matching my seasons. Is my style going to insanely change in 2013? Probably not. I definitely want to continue to challenge myself to come up with interesting choices and try new things, but my biggest goal in starting Selective Potential was to learn and develop my own personal style and I'd say... mission accomplished. I know what I like to wear and what makes me feel most comfortable and pretty. I'd say blue was my color of the year too... including mint!

If you're interested... you can see my top outfits of 2009, 2010 and 2011!

Winter Featured Blogger

For my winter featured blogger, I chose Mandy of Miss Indie! I absolutely love Mandy's blog. She's so sweet, down-to-earth and I love her vintage inspired and colorful sense of style. Her posts are constantly fun and exciting to read. I always look forward to catching up on her DIYs, daily style posts and favorite things. Plus, her photography and radiant self-confidence are always inspiring to me! Here are some questions to get to know her better. Be sure to head over and check out this darling gal's blog!

1. When and why did you start your blog?

I started Miss Indie in 2009 as both a daily journal and a way to share bits from my online shop. I've always had some sort of blog ever since middle school, starting with Xanga (remember those?), then moving on to Myspace, and finally my current blog. I can't imagine life without some sort of space to share my thoughts and inspirations.

2. Tell us a little bit about your blog and what you focus on.

Miss Indie is a lifestyle blog with a focus on fashion, handmade, and vintage. I blog daily about peeks from my everyday life, daily outfits, fashion + styling tips, fun DIYs, vintage finds, and things that inspire me. My goal is to share my life while promoting a handmade, vintage-inspired lifestyle, and to inspire others to live as creatively as possible.

3. Can you quick brief us your indie business?

I own an online shop called Indie Darling where I sell handmade accessories like crocheted hats, bags, and jewelry. I'm currently working on a collection of hand-painted rings, and I'm really excited to debut them!

4. Describe your style in three words.

Vintage-inspired, feminine, and quirky. :)

5. What's your favorite thing to do in your free time?

When I have free time (which is rare, haha) I love to go thrifting at my favorite flea markets, get coffee at the Dancing Mule, work on whatever craft project I'm currently tackling, or get caught up on my favorite blogs.

6. What's your favorite recipe?

Most of my favorite recipes are my dad's, which I'm looking forward to having passed down to me some day. :) A recipe I'm looking forward to trying is Mandi's Sweet Potato Holiday Slaw. I think I'm going to make it for our family Christmas dinner.

7. What do you love most about Springfield?

I love all of the cute local shops, restaurants, and coffeehouses! There are so many fun places to visit here, and I love that there is such an exciting creative community within Springfield. This town is covered in cute vintage shops and quirky art galleries. I absolutely adore living here!

9. Favorite bands/musicians?

All-time favorites would have to be…The Decemberists, She & Him, Death Cab For Cutie, and Angels & Airwaves. Currently, I'm loving The Lumineers and Lana Del Rey (and I've secretly been listening to Justin Bieber, but shhh! Don't tell anyone!).

10. Any tips for new bloggers starting out?

If you're wanting your blog to be more of a business than a "personal diary", I highly suggest taking some time to really figure out what type of blog you want to be and what content you want to focus on. Do you want to be a craft blog? A fashion blog? A healthy living blog? I know over time your interests may change and that's absolutely fine, but knowing what you want your blog to be right now will help save you a lot of time and stress when trying to figure out what to blog about. Take your time, make some lists of what you do and don't want to share on your blog, and keep in mind what really inspires you. All of these things will help you create a blog that you will truly be in love with!

I hope you all enjoyed getting to know Mandy a little bit more. Be sure to head over to her blog and follow along! You can also keep up with her on Twitter and Facebook. And... if you enjoyed reading this feature, be sure to check out my other featured bloggers!
