Only choice

Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse, pronounced Sis-shwa, means "only choice". It was named by the French who found it was the only harbor of refuge in this part of Lake Michigan. I’ve already done a full blog post here… saw this lighthouse for the first time back in 2019, and went during operating hours so I was able to visit all of the buildings and climb to the top of the tower, but this was my first time back here since living in the Upper Peninsula. I love revisiting places up here, I swear it just never gets old, I think it’s a good sign I was meant to live here, and not just be a visitor. So grateful life weirdly worked out in a way that one of my biggest life dreams could come true while I’m still young enough to enjoy a lifetime of it. Ugh, did I just tear up?! 🥺

This past Memorial Day weekend was lovely! Just… vibes through the roof, kind of thing. Cozy, peaceful, fun. That’s not always been the case, I typically swirl and struggle with long weekends, but creating a little itinerary for myself was a game-changer, along with doing some some real emotional work lately. Homemade pizza at home, watching Apocalypse Now, fresh flowers from the farmer’s market, cleaning my apartment, laundry, an afternoon trip to Manisitique, a sweet wine flight, twist in a cone, the blue greens of Kitch-iti-kipi, brunch with friends, crashing carts into each other at the grocery store while getting supplies for our cookout, crushing a 9-mile run, making my first ever potato salad (a little crunchy, live and learn!), along with being fully immersed in Grumpier Old Men (Memorial Day tradition, those characters just give me heart feels through the roof), along with a beautiful evening, and sunshiny wonderful cookout with friends, hot-dogs, lavender lemonades, and strawberry shortcake, and a restful night at home, just… all of it was so special. ✨

My day in Manistique… I didn’t realize was pretty much exactly this blog post that I did back in 2019, adding in Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse, so if you’re interested in recreating it, head over there! But the winery, dinner at Tap21, Kitch-iti-kipi, ice-cream from Dairy Kreme, and the lighthouse, along with a beautiful golden hour on the drive home made for a lovely afternoon/evening. Visiting in spring in this area is interesting though, I could not believe the amount of bugs at the lighthouse (and on my car!) Mud season in the UP is also known as bug season, lol, that’s for sure. But I hope you all had a wonderful long holiday weekend, and were able to reflect on the holiday and be grateful and remember those who lost their lives so we could live ours today. 🇺🇸 Plus, it’s the unofficial kickoff to summer!
