Snapshots from Whitefish Point
Hiiiii! Already halfway through July… oof. Is summer flying for everyone or is it just me? Trying to hang on for the ride, that’s for sure. But! I recently headed over to the east side of the Upper Peninsula to capture some content for a video collaboration I’m working on, and it was a lovely excuse to spend an evening in Paradise and make my way up to Whitefish Point. It was interesting being here… a) during peak tourist season, and b) during muggy/buggy season. This spot became sort of a November tradition, so it was definitely a departure of vibes from when I usually visit. But yeah, people galore, attacking flies galore, humidity galore. I snapped a few pictures on the beach, walked around the grounds, watched the passing freighter, swatted a few persistent flies and immediately darted out of there. Maybe I’ll be back in November. 😆
Always a beautiful spot though, always one of my favorites. Whitefish Point lighthouse is the oldest on Lake Superior, and this is the spot where the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, so the area is full of history. I actually had to go back the next morning to capture some video content from inside the shipwreck museum (definitely a must-see). I loved being able to see the second-order Fresnel lens from White Shoal Lighthouse (one I just saw a few weeks ago), aaaand the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald itself. And I spent an absurd amount of time in the gift shop, wanting to buy everything Michigan and nautical-themed, reeled it in and left with a U.S. Lighthouse Service mug.
Otherwise, it was a lovely quick overnight trip in Paradise. I stayed at the Paradise Lakefront Lodge in a lakefront room with a balcony (love), walked over to dinner at The Inn, which was delicious. I drank blackberry wine and ate wings, got their famous carrot cake to-go. Relaxed on the balcony with a view of Lake Superior, took a drive up to Whitefish Point to snap photos, windows down and music up on the way home, and then slider door open, carrot cake in bed, watching Water for Elephants, those are probably some of my favorite moments weirdly… just a solo adventure, sun setting, a movie on a hotel TV with the slider door open, I don’t know, it was just a vibe. And the next day, I went back to the museum, got lunch at the Wheelhouse Diner & Goatlocker Saloon before venturing back home, with a quick pit stop for lighthouses and ice-cream in Grand Marais.
