Mayor of Hell

So just in time for Halloween this weekend… I’m here to talk about how I became mayor of Hell for a day! So for those of you who aren’t familiar, there’s a small town in Michigan called Hell! I visited actually in 2012, and loved it. It’s a super corny and cheesy town, but it’s all in good fun. There’s only a few things to do in Hell… be Mayor of Hell for the day, get married in the chapel, play putt-putt golf, eat ice-cream at Screams, shop for Halloween all-year round, mail a letter from Hell (lots of tax paperwork and divorce paperwork goes through this post office, haha!), eat at the Hell Hole Bar and you can lock your love on the bridge. You’ll even receive a certificate from the mayor!

So… to back up, one day I was scrolling through Twitter and saw that you could become mayor of the day and STAY in Hell for a night. I was like… oh my gosh! And it wasn’t a contest, but Hell worked with Airbnb to create a room out of the Hell chapel. They were only offering up three nights, and so I set a reminder, and an alarm to sign up as soon as it was available. So the day comes, I had a note drafted on why I wanted to stay, I refreshed the screen a million times at noon, only saw ONE night available, clicked on it as fast as I possibly could, and secured one spot. Hahaha. I was like oh my gosh. It was literally the fastest I ever had to be on the internet. So yeah, that was super exciting!! So I arrived in Hell, and it was amazing. Airbnb had it all set up in collab with Hell, with a bed/room, outdoor area for watching movies on a projector, etc. Unfortunately I didn’t end up staying due to a snafu with the township, but it was still SO much fun to be able to see it all set up and to get some fun pictures!

So yeah… during my time in Hell, I was inducted as mayor in front of the townspeople, lol. I did a little shopping at the gift shop. Played some putt-putt golf! Grabbed a drink and a meal at Hell Hole Diner, which was yummy. They have this gravy bowl with mashed redskins, fried chicken, cheese and gravy that is delicious. Plus all the mini bottles of wine from the cooler. It started raining when dark hit, so I didn’t get to stay and watch any movies, but isn’t this the most fun setting for a spooky movie night?! I’d totally watch Hocus Pocus out here.

So yeah, if you’ve never been to Hell, Michigan before… it’s worth it to say you’ve “been to Hell” or if anyone tells you to go to Hell, you can say you’ve already been here! Hahaha. What are you guys up to for Halloween this year? I have zero plans. My friend group’s plans have all been cancelled because we’re laying super low due to COVID, which is smart. It’s getting nuts out there; make sure you’re safe with whatever you do. Wear a mask, wash your hands, social-distance, all the stuff you’ve heard a million times again and again. I’ll probably order takeout in, watch a few of my favorite Halloween movies, and hopefully take a walk to enjoy the autumn colors! Have a great Hallo-weekend!! 🎃
